The day she was “born”
To be honest with you, it wasn’t a day, but a process. Somewhere in my head that tiny thought got stuck. An idea. An image. Call it as you wish.
So I was drawing something. A tiny creature with a slightly different shape every time. Then she didn’t have a name yet. She was… Something. And that something was getting more and more clear. Until THAT day.
It was a 2nd year of my 2nd course at university – Practical linguistics with copywriting. I needed to create a good presentation for one of the subjects. It was about making a business plan. I was looking up the pictures I could use for it, but I didn’t like them. Also, all money connected graphics were either plain ugly or showing a man. I needed a good drawing.
Well, it was an impulse that I decided to draw something on my own. As I happen to be a bit of an artist, not only a writer and traveler, it wasn’t that much of a challenge either. But still. I needed to draw something that’ll be good enough for the university standards.
So I took my graphic tablet, switched on the PowerPoint and started adding tiny drawing of Chłopinka on each page. On each page she was showing something connected to the topic. Some coins, a phone etc.
This is where she finally got here current looks. She was chubby and blue. With long brown hair and tiny, blue eyes that looked a bit like a psycho killer. But most of all, she was cute, and she was mine.
I wasn’t perfectly sure, my work will be approved. However, I was quite proud of my work. The presentation was reasonable and thanks to the drawings, it wasn’t all that boring.
And everyone loved it! All my friends were giggling to the sight of Chłopinka showing them more and more information about business plan. The same went for our professor, who was quite curious about the tiny creature. And so she came to life.
Her name is Chłopinka
So she was alive. She started as moderatly good drawing and evolved. Since then, I was working on her looks. Made a special file in photoshop. Her whole body – in the final form you know – was in it. But she couldn’t remain nameless forever.
For my own purposes I was calling her Chłopinka, but I didn’t consider it a name yet. In Polish, it’s an existing word that comes from a word “chłop” meaning “chap”. It’s like a diminutive. But this wasn’t what I meant. My Chłopinka is basically a tiny, female version of a chap. Therefore, Chłopinka.
And It kinda stuck. I got so used to this name by this point, there was no changing it. This is what she was. Chłopinka. After all, it is not far from truth as I (her creator) come from a small village. But back then she was still just a drawing.
Additionally, she took on my appearance a bit. My natural hair color is brown, not blond. And we both have blue eyes. So it was all making perfect sense to me.
However, I’d like to stress, that she is not me. Chłopinka is not me. I’m me. She’s her. I’m writing the blog, but she’s traveling with me and posing for pictures.
It took me some time, to give her real, 3-dimensional body. But I was going to. Then the work&travel USA happened. I had a goal to make her, before leaving for the USA. And I did. It took me whole week. Every day, I would spend around 5 to 6 hours to finish her.
I found materials and all. Made a plan and started sewing. Moreover, I don’t own the sewing machine, so you can imagine. It wasn’t easy, but I used to sew clothes for my dolls, when I was a child. Although it was a big project, it wasn’t impossible.
After a week, she was ready to go. She was a real mascot with lots of hair. However, I must admit, she still needs some improvements. She also turned out to be a bit bigger, than planned. Still, I’m very proud of my work. Welcome to the world, Chłopinka!
So far, she has been to the USA with me. Although I must admit, most of my time on Mackinac Island, she spent gathering dust. Except those few bike trip, when I took her with me. We were drawing tourists’ attention.
But after we have finally finished our contract, we were both good to go. And so we travel a bit around the USA. Together visiting New York (picture above is from Central Park), then we went to Miami and Las Vegas. After that me both moved to Mexico, and ended our journey in the USA.
It was 17 days of travel. Chłopinka’s first travel. But we made it. It wasn’t always easy. But she was attached to my backpack at all times. Always with me. So even if I traveled alone, I wasn’t exactly alone. She might not be human, but my camera catches her face, as if she was human.
So she’s at least similar enough to be considered human by my camera. I’d say that’s quite an achievement for her. Especially that her looks are quite peculiar.
After the USA she was properly washed. This was another test she passed. I was afraid she’d not make it. Or at the very least that she’d lose her hair. But nothing like that happened. Instead, she was nice and clean and smelled like flowers.
